Plugging the stereo output through an amp instead seemed to give much better results. This may be an issue of the power being insufficent to drive the earphones without amplification, resulting in no bass. But through this HDMI audio splitter, the audio was tinny and lifeless. Doing this with my DAC (which doesn't have an amp built-in either) gives perfectly reasonable sound quality. This isn't a sensible way to use the device either way, since the volume isn't adjustable. I also tested the stereo 3.5mm output by plugging earphones directly into it. So I'd say the audio's being played pretty much untouched. Bass and soundstage seemed present, and there were no distortions that I could hear that weren't present when played through another source too.

harsh 'ess' sounds), but playing the same movie through a different source, I believe that's just a matter of the film's audio mix. Watching a film to test the audio quality, I did find the audio a bit sibilant (i.e.

I'm not sure if the device does any processing to that signal that could affect quality. Since I'm using a digital optical connection, the resulting audio output should be 'bit perfect' to what is coming out of the HDMI connection. For my use case, copy protection was the biggest barrier, so I'm happy to report that I've had no issues with the switches on the unit left to the default position.
ASTRO AUDIO SPLITTER 1080P
It can play both Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video without and HDCP errors, and they both load 1080p with no apparent degradation to the video quality. I have the device set up to connect to a dedicated DAC via the Optical SPDIF output. I also have a 60fps 1080p non-HDR display, so I can't comment on HDR or >60fps performance. This means this review won't touch on either the ability of the device to handle 5.1 channel audio or how the device functions as a scaler.

I bought to split the stereo PCM audio from a Firestick 4K, mainly to allow me to use Disney+ with a PC monitor (since they currently limit streams to 720p on Windows computers).
ASTRO AUDIO SPLITTER UPDATE
Just need to make the update process a bit more user friendly. However, I now have 4k/120hz/VRR AND 5.1 audio split to the optical port (you hold down the select button until the LED flashes), exactly what I wanted. The update process isn't very user friendly. UPDATE: contacted support and they send you a new firmware that solves this. So yes, it supports all the things you might need, just not at the same time. So - out of the box you can only have 4k/120hz with surround without VRR OR you can have 4k/120hz with VRR and stereo only. If you do that and your screen doesn't send EDID data for surround then you only get stereo audio. monitor is a MSI MPG321UR-QDĢ) docs for the unit tell you to select "Copy EDID" to get VRR working. Noticed later on that VRR is unavailable. bought this to plug my xbox series x into my HDMI 2.1 gaming monitor and get 4k HDR 120hz while splitting the audio to the Logitech speakers.ġ) Used the button on the front to pick the profile for splitting 5.1 audio out and sending 4k 120hz to the screen, all good, getting 5.1 to the speakers and 120hz 4k to the screen. I've got some Logitech surround speakers that only have toslink.
